Just launched Notepad++ on your high-resolution display? I’m sure you are seeing the toolbar and the icons of Notepad++ are so tiny to use it properly. It’s because of Windows is not scaling properly or Notepad++ didn’t add support to the mobile UX. This problem happens on the latest high end laptops like XPS 13/15, Lenovo Yoga, Microsoft Surface etc. But it can be fixed very easily by creating a manifest file. In this article I’m going to write how to create the manifest file and fix Notepad++ UI scaling problem on High DPI displays.
The problem is when a application doesn’t have any mobile UX scaling, Windows automatically set the scaling to 100% which makes the application interface smaller. By using a manifest file you can easily inform Windows not to scale that software.
On the right side, you can see Notepad++ FTP Plugin’s icons are very small.
Fix Notepad++ scaling on High DPI Display
So, firstly you will have to create a manifest file, which will let Windows know that this software don’t need auto scaling.
So create a text file in your PC by Right clicking on desktop > New > New Text Document
Now paste the code in that text file, here’s the code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes"?> <assembly xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v1" manifestVersion="1.0" xmlns:asmv3="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v3"> <dependency> <dependentAssembly> <assemblyIdentity type="win32" name="Microsoft.Windows.Common-Controls" version="188.8.131.52" processorArchitecture="*" publicKeyToken="6595b64144ccf1df" language="*"> </assemblyIdentity> </dependentAssembly> </dependency> <dependency> <dependentAssembly> <assemblyIdentity type="win32" name="Microsoft.VC90.CRT" version="9.0.21022.8" processorArchitecture="amd64" publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b"> </assemblyIdentity> </dependentAssembly> </dependency> <trustInfo xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v3"> <security> <requestedPrivileges> <requestedExecutionLevel level="asInvoker" uiAccess="false"/> </requestedPrivileges> </security> </trustInfo> <asmv3:application> <asmv3:windowsSettings xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/SMI/2005/WindowsSettings"> <ms_windowsSettings:dpiAware xmlns:ms_windowsSettings="http://schemas.microsoft.com/SMI/2005/WindowsSettings">false</ms_windowsSettings:dpiAware> </asmv3:windowsSettings> </asmv3:application> </assembly>
Now save the text file and rename it to notepad++.exe.manifest. Note that you will have to replace the .txt extension also.
After saving and replacing the file, go to
- This PC(My Computer)
- Local Disk(C:)
- Program Files
Then paste the file there. Windows may ask for permission, if it does then click on OK and Finally restart your laptop or PC.
Here’s the result:
As you can see, Note++ User interface now fixed and larger now. Also the icons have become large enough to use it easily.
But there’s still some problems, you may notice text are little bit blurred. You can easily fix that also. Just go to Windows search bar and search for performance then click on Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows.
Now just Unmark Smooth edges of screen fonts and click on OK. Finally restart your computer and hope you will see that the fonts are sharper now.
I hope this post helped you. Enjoy Notepad++ without any scaling problem on your high resolution monitor or display.
